Explore the best of Spain on a Mediterranean cruise or a river cruise down the legendary Douro River. Explore the cosmopolitan cultural centers of Barcelona, & Madrid. Visit the royal Alcazar Palace in Seville, built originally for the Moorish Muslim kings, in stark contrast to the Gothic cathedrals of European influence. Witness authentic Flamenco expressions in the Andalusia region. Or, visit the beaches of the volcanic Canary Islands off the Atlantic coast. Many Spanish cruises also either start or end on Portugal's Atlantic coast, giving you a chance to get to know cities like Lisbon and Porto. Southern Spain also provides an excellent place to embark on a Mediterranean cruise visiting France, Italy and even Morocco in Northern Africa. Spain Cruise Tips & Travel Guide

Spain's Travel Highlights
Comprising the majority of the Iberian Peninsula, the cultures and traditions of Spain are as diverse as Europe itself, and each city has a distinct personality, home to its own unique sites and attractions. Flamenco, wine-tasting, hiking, biking, and walking tours are just a few of the activities available to you as you visit:
  • Barcelona is  one of the most-visited destinations in the world and home of the work of legendary architect Antoni Gaudi, whose "Sagrada Familia" is still under construction to this day, after more than 100 years.
  • Cadiz and the Straits of Gibraltar are a gateway to the Canary Islands and Sevilla.
  • Palma de Mallorca and the Balearic Islands where you can bike or hike through the charming traditional towns and rolling valleys and mountains of the countryside. Or, visit Ibiza for it's famous nightlife.
  • Salamanca is an historical port city on the Douro River with its own unique culture.
  • Granada is tucked between the three hills of Albaicin,  Sacromonte, and Alhambra bordering the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range in Spain's Andalusia region.
  • Cordoba is home to the famous mosque-cathedral, with a stunning 856 interior columns; also home to the Jewish Quarter.
  • Seville features stunning Alcazar palace, the Andalusian gardens, and Maria Luisa Park.

Spain Traveller Stories & Reviews

Spain Travel FAQs

Why should I choose a Spain cruise?
Whether you're touring coastal Spain and the Mediterranean or central Spain and Portugal via the Douro River, a cruise is definitely the way to go. There's no question that these cruises are quickly becoming the most popular way to see Europe, and it's no wonder why – the value of a cruise is much better than a land-based tour since all lodging, meals, and the daily tours are included. Plus, you will not lose any time getting from one destination to the next since your vessel will take advantage of nights and meal times to do the majority of the cruising. Several riverboats and ships will also rent bikes or snorkeling equipment depending on the tour.

What should I look for on a riverboat?
Whether you are planning to explore the Iberian coast of the Mediterranean or the rivers that course through central Spain and Portugal, you can count on comfort and style on your riverboat. Spacious cabins, multiple social areas, fine dining, bars, and perhaps even a pool, spa, or fitness area are all amenities available on our vessels and ships. On the river vessels, you will enjoy the views from the panoramic sun decks, and the mega-yachts of the Mediterranean will delight you with their luxurious highlights.

Can I find a five-star boat to cruise Spain?
The boats we feature for our Spanish cruises aren't considered five-star vessels due to size limitations and the consequent fewer social areas and amenities, however we have hand-picked a selection of the most comfortable, elegant, and stylish boats to rival the experience of any five star cruise ship.

Should I get a room with a balcony?
Unless your heart is set on a balcony, it's generally just an unneccesary expense. Your boat already has a panoramic sundeck and a balcony could actually take up some of your cabin's floor space, so your best bet is to book a room with floor to ceiling windows or a "French balcony" that has a sliding glass door facing outwards that you can use to convert your whole room into a "balcony."

What is dining like?
On your journey through Spain you will enjoy a delightful mix of gourmet local and international cuisine prepared by talented local chefs.

Do river cruises ever visit destinations that aren't on the river?
Yes! Spain has a lot of destinations that aren't right on the rivers, so many of our itineraries do include these as well. Your boat will dock in the closest port and then you will enjoy a scenic luxury coach ride to your destination that day.

Will my vessel have WiFi?
Most vessels do, some vessels don't. But even the vessels that do offer WiFi might frequently be out of range of a signal, so you might not have signal for up to several hours or even days.

What kind of power outlets are there? Will I need a converter?
Europe runs on 220v power, whereas North America has 110v power, but since most devices can handle both levels, there's usually no need to buy a power converter. The plugs will require adapters – you will need to have either two round prongs or three flat prongs.

How can I save money on a river cruise?
The best way to save money on a river cruise is to find a great promotion on our Deals page. Alternatively, you could let us know which destinations you'd like to visit and we'll tell you as soon as we find special offers. Don't try to save money on a cruise by reserving a cabin that is smaller or cheaper since you will probably be diminishing the overall quality of your experience as well.

Are river cruises in Spain a good family vacation?
Spain can be a very fun destination to visit with the whole family, but make sure that if you are traveling with younger kids you aren't booking a cruise that focuses on wine tasting, since these are better for more mature travelers of a drinking age. Check out our family travel article for more information.

Do Americans and Canadians need a passport and visa to travel to Spain?
All citizens of North America traveling to Europe need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months. In recent years, it has not been necessary to apply for a visa before traveling to Europe if you plan to stay less than three months, however, this situation may change in the future. See current European visa requirements.
